Airline Safety Experts Develop Passenger Safety Training Class
A passenger safety training course to help airline travelers avoid
injury and survive accidents has been developed by Safety Services
International, a group of aviation safety professionals.
"Most people don't realize that passengers can survive about
70 percent of airline accidents, and how the passenger responds
can have a major impact on his or her chance of survival,"
according to Kevin Darcy, co-founder of Safety Services International.
"Also, passengers have almost complete control over avoiding
the minor injuries that occur on more routine flights," Darcy
adds.
The four-hour course--designed primarily for business and civic-groups--includes
a look at accident statistics, how to select a flight from a safety
standpoint, hands-on familiarization with safety equipment, and
provides a mental checklist passengers can use before each takeoff
and landing to be fully prepared for an emergency.
The course focuses on the practical actions passengers can take
to avoid injuries, and to be prepared in the event of a serious
event. It relies on accident statistics, and the collective experience
the firm's experts, to insure that the emphasis is on the most important
safety items.
The class also provides time for questions and answers relating
to many aviation safety-related issues. "Most people's perception
of safety is driven by what the media reports. Unfortunately that's
usually after a major accident," according to Darcy. "People
usually feel more comfortable and confident when they understand
the issues and can put the risks in perspective. We help them do
that."
Safety Services International was formed in 1999 to provide all
segments of the industry, legal community and government with expertise
in aviation safety, accident investigation, and operation of large
and small aircraft.
