Purvis Receives Lifetime Achievement Award from ISASI

Safety Services International's founding co-partner, John Purvis, has received the Jerome F. Lederer Award for outstanding lifetime contributions in the field of airplane accident investigations and prevention. The award, given annually by the International Society of Air Safety Investigators (ISASI), recognizes achievement of the society's objectives and technical excellence. Purvis received the award in Victoria, BC at the association's annual meeting September 20.

Purvis led The Boeing Company's commercial airplane investigation team for 17 years, and retired in 1999. During his tenure as chief of Boeing's investigative branch, he directed the company's participation in 2,500 events, more than 250 of which were classified as accidents involving hull losses, fatalities or major damage. In the mission of airplane safety, he has been credited for crossing traditional boundaries in establishing the highest standards of cooperation with investigating and regulatory authorities, customers and others in the aviation safety field.

Outside of the Boeing environment his influence as an industry leader has made him a popular speaker on safety issues and his views are widely sought.

Purvis continues to pursue aviation safety. In 1999, he created the consulting firm of Safety Services International with partner Kevin Darcy, another former Boeing investigator. Among his activities, he serves on the faculty of the Southern California Safety Institute, and teaches safety courses to airline professionals.

The award was created by ISASI to honor Lederer, a leader in the world of aviation safety since its infancy. A lifelong friend of Charles Lindbergh, Lederer was the first director of the Bureau of Air Safety in the Civil Aeronautics Board, established the Flight Safety Foundation and organized the first flight safety office for NASA. Lederer, who will be 100 years old next year, lives in California. He was an honored guest at the conference in Victoria.

A second Lederer award went to the Canadian Transportation Safety Board for its handling of the Swissair MD11 investigation off Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1998.

ISASI is an international society made of up persons actively engaged in the investigation of aircraft accidents or in prevention activities that identify, eliminate or control aviation hazards before accidents result.
